What is excel automation for database reporting?

Excel automation for database reporting refers to tools and workflows that connect Microsoft Excel directly to live databases, eliminating the manual cycle of running queries, exporting to CSV, and copying data into spreadsheets. With Query Streams, you save a SQL query once and any authorized user can pull fresh results into Excel with a single click from the add-in.

How does Query Streams automate Excel reports without VBA or macros?

Query Streams uses a lightweight Agent that runs on your server and connects outbound to the cloud relay. You write SQL in the web portal and save queries with optional interactive filters. End users open the native Excel add-in, select a saved query, adjust filters, and click refresh. No VBA code, no macros, no database drivers on the user's machine.

Can I run multiple database queries into Excel at the same time?

Yes. Query Streams supports parallel query execution. You can launch five saved queries into five different worksheet tabs simultaneously, and the Agent streams each result concurrently regardless of data volume. Multiple users can also pull data at the same time without queuing or blocking each other.

How do interactive filters work in the Excel add-in?

Interactive filters let end users customize report parameters without seeing the underlying SQL. Query Streams supports explicit variables like @region and @start_date that appear as named controls, and auto-detected filters where the system identifies static values in WHERE clauses and makes them configurable. Users see dropdown menus and date pickers while the SQL logic stays hidden.

How is Query Streams different from Power Query or ODBC for database connections?

Power Query and ODBC require local configuration per user including driver installation, connection strings, and credentials stored on each machine. Query Streams centralizes everything: queries are saved in the cloud, credentials stay on the Agent, execution is parallel, and any user with the Excel add-in can access shared queries from any computer. It also works identically in Google Sheets.

Can I share automated Excel reports with my team?

Yes. You can share saved queries with specific users or teams. Shared users see the query in their Excel add-in, adjust any available filters, and pull live data on demand without any action from the query creator. The SQL code remains hidden, providing self-service database access for non-technical users.

Does Query Streams require VPN or firewall changes?

No. The Query Streams Agent makes outbound-only connections on standard HTTPS and WSS ports. No inbound firewall rules, no port forwarding, and no VPN tunnels are required. Your database never accepts connections from the internet.

What databases can I connect to Excel with Query Streams?

Query Streams supports Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQLite, Microsoft Access, Oracle, Snowflake, Google BigQuery, and DuckDB. A single Agent installation connects to multiple engines simultaneously. More database integrations are coming soon.

Can non-technical users pull database data into Excel?

Yes. A database administrator writes the SQL once and saves the query with interactive filters. Non-technical users then open the Excel add-in, select from available queries, adjust filters using simple controls, and click refresh. They never see SQL or need database credentials.

Is there a free tier for Excel automation with Query Streams?

Yes. Query Streams offers a free tier that includes Agent deployment, database connections, saved queries, the Excel add-in, and the Google Sheets add-on. You can sign up for free at my.querystreams.com and start automating Excel reports without entering a credit card.
