What Makes a Data Analytics Platform
A data analytics platform is the layer between your raw databases and the people who need answers from them. At minimum, it handles connectivity (getting data out of databases securely), querying (writing or generating SQL), analysis (understanding what the data means), and delivery (putting results where people actually work). Most platforms handle one or two of these well and hand the rest off to other tools, other vendors, or your engineering team.
The analytics platform market has grown rapidly. According to Gartner, the global analytics and business intelligence market exceeds $28 billion annually, yet adoption among non-technical business users remains below 35%. The gap is not about demand — it is about accessibility. Most platforms still assume their users can write code, model data, or navigate complex interfaces. The organizations that close this gap are the ones that treat analytics as a workflow problem, not a technology problem.
What Traditional Analytics Platforms Get Wrong
There is no shortage of analytics platforms. Tableau, Power BI, Looker, Metabase, Apache Superset, and dozens of others compete for the same use case. They are powerful tools. But they share a set of assumptions that limit how many people in an organization can actually use them — and how quickly anyone can get from question to answer.
They build walled gardens around your data. Results live inside proprietary dashboards that require licensed access to view, filter, or export. When a stakeholder needs the data in a spreadsheet — which they almost always do — someone has to export a CSV and email it. The data is stale before it arrives.
They require data modeling before anyone can ask a question. Before a single chart appears, someone has to define relationships, build measures, create calculated fields, and publish a semantic model. This front-loaded investment means new questions that fall outside the model require another engineering cycle.
They charge per seat. Tableau Creator costs $75/user/month. Power BI Pro is $10/user/month but Premium Per User jumps to $20+. For a 50-person finance team that needs access to quarterly reports, annual BI licensing alone can exceed $45,000 — and that is before implementation, training, and data engineering time.
They assume cloud-hosted data. Many modern analytics platforms work best (or only) with cloud data warehouses like Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift. Organizations with on-premise Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, or MariaDB databases face integration complexity, latency, or the pressure to migrate data to the cloud just to run reports.
The Query Streams Approach: SQL at Every Layer
Query Streams takes a different position in the analytics platform market. Instead of replacing SQL with a proprietary abstraction, the entire platform is built around it. SQL is the query language. Spreadsheets are the presentation layer. AI generates the SQL when needed. And a secure Agent handles the database connectivity without exposing your network. For a detailed walkthrough of the web portal, see our database dashboard guide.
The end-to-end flow looks like this:
Your Databases
SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, BigQuery, APIs
Agent
Secure outbound-only bridge on your network
Portal
Web query builder, sharing, Nova AI, charts
Excel & Sheets
Live results in the tools you already use
Layer 1: The Agent — Secure Database Connectivity
The Query Streams Agent is a lightweight service that runs on your infrastructure — Windows, Linux, or macOS. It makes outbound-only connections to the Query Streams cloud, which means no inbound ports, no firewall changes, and no VPN configuration. Database credentials stay on your machine and are never transmitted. You can download the Agent and have your first data source connected in under five minutes.
Deploy multiple Agents across your infrastructure based on your subscription tier. Install one in your office for on-premise SQL Server, another on an AWS EC2 instance for your PostgreSQL cluster, and a third on a Google Cloud VM for BigQuery. Each Agent self-maintains with automatic updates and presents its data sources as a unified dropdown in the query builder, so users select from available sources without needing to know which Agent or network location hosts each database. For optimal performance, deploy Agents in the same network or region as their databases.
The Agent supports 10+ database connectors: Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQLite, Microsoft Access, Oracle, Snowflake, BigQuery, and DuckDB. It also includes 6+ API Bridge connectors — Stripe, HubSpot, Shopify, Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and iTick — that cache API data locally in DuckDB so you can query SaaS platforms using standard SQL.
Layer 2: The Portal — Query Building and Management
The Query Streams portal at my.querystreams.com is where queries are written, tested, saved, and shared. The web-based query builder provides a SQL editor with syntax highlighting, a schema explorer showing tables and columns from your connected databases, and a results pane that displays data in tabular format.
Semantic Intelligence sits underneath the query builder. It profiles your database metadata — table names, column names, data types, relationships, and cardinality — and feeds that context to both the manual query experience and the AI layer. When you start typing a table name, the editor autocompletes from your actual schema. When Nova AI generates a query, it uses the same metadata to write SQL that references real tables and real columns.
Interactive filters are a core feature. Query Streams can detect filterable values in your SQL — both explicit variables (e.g., @region) and static values that can be parameterized (e.g., WHERE status = 'active'). Enable filters from the query Properties tab, and anyone you share the query with can adjust those parameters independently from Excel or Google Sheets without ever seeing or modifying the SQL code.
Query sharing lets you securely share the interactive capability to run a specific query, not just the results. Shared users pick a query from their personal list, adjust filters, and get live data on-demand from their own spreadsheet — anytime, anywhere. The original query creator does not need to be involved.
Layer 3: Nova AI — Conversational Analytics
Nova AI is the built-in BI and AI analytics engine. It turns plain English questions into validated, dialect-correct SQL, executes the query against live data, and presents results with auto-generated charts and natural-language analysis. For a deeper look at the conversational experience, see our conversational BI guide.
What makes Nova different from generic AI SQL tools is schema awareness. Before generating a single line of SQL, Nova loads your actual table metadata through Semantic Intelligence. It knows your column names, data types, and relationships. When it generates SQL, it uses a dedicated dialect engine with 9 production dialects — T-SQL for SQL Server, PL/pgSQL for PostgreSQL, MySQL syntax for MySQL, and so on. Every query passes through a multi-layer validation pipeline: syntax check, table name verification, column name validation with fuzzy correction, and structural checks. The result is SQL that actually runs on the first attempt.
Nova supports 6 chart types — bar, line, pie, scatter, area, and horizontal bar — automatically selecting the most appropriate visualization based on query results. Charts are generated alongside data and conversational analysis, so you get the full picture in a single response. Follow-up questions refine the analysis without starting over. Ask “break that down by region” or “show the last 6 months only” and Nova adjusts the query, re-executes, and updates the chart.
Layer 4: Delivery — Excel, Google Sheets, and Beyond
The final layer is where most analytics platforms fall short: getting results into the tools people actually work in. Query Streams delivers live data to Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets through native add-ins.
The add-ins support parallel query execution. Launch five saved queries into five different worksheet tabs simultaneously, and the Agent streams each concurrently, regardless of result size. Each query runs on-demand — no scheduled refreshes, no stale exports. Users select a query from their list, adjust available filters, and get live results in their spreadsheet. The person who created the query does not need to be involved.
Beyond spreadsheets, Query Streams includes automation and integration that syncs query results to Airtable, Smartsheet, Baserow, and SeaTable on a scheduled basis. Turn any query — manually written or AI-generated — into a recurring data pipeline without writing integration code.

Who This Is For
Query Streams works well for a specific set of use cases. It is not trying to replace every analytics platform on the market — it is built for organizations and individuals that want SQL-based analytics with spreadsheet delivery.
Small to Mid-Size Businesses
Teams that need database reporting without the cost or complexity of enterprise BI tools. Finance, operations, and sales teams that live in spreadsheets but need live database access.
Data Analysts and SQL Users
Analysts who write SQL and want a faster path from query to spreadsheet. Use the query builder for manual SQL or let Nova AI generate and validate queries from natural language.
IT Teams and Database Administrators
DBAs who want to give business users self-service access without opening database ports or granting direct credentials. The Agent’s outbound-only architecture keeps the network secure.
Teams That Share Data Externally
Organizations that share reports with clients, vendors, or partners. Share the capability to run a query without exposing SQL code, credentials, or database structure.
Multi-Database Environments
Companies running SQL Server on-premise, PostgreSQL in AWS, BigQuery for analytics, and Stripe for payments. Unify all sources in one platform with Agents deployed across environments.
Students and Educators
Students learning SQL who want to practice against real databases, and educators who want to give students hands-on access to live data without managing database credentials or networking.
Who Should Look Elsewhere
Honest positioning matters more than marketing claims. Query Streams is not the right fit for every analytics need, and knowing when to look elsewhere saves time for everyone.
Supported Databases and Connectors
Query Streams connects to relational databases, analytical engines, and SaaS APIs through a unified Agent architecture. Nova AI generates dialect-correct SQL for each, and the Excel/Sheets add-ins deliver results regardless of the source.
| Category | Data Sources | Nova AI Dialect |
|---|---|---|
| Relational | Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, SQLite, Microsoft Access, Oracle | T-SQL, PL/pgSQL, MySQL, SQLite, Oracle SQL |
| Cloud / Warehouse | Snowflake, BigQuery | Snowflake SQL, BigQuery SQL |
| Analytical | DuckDB | DuckDB SQL |
| API Bridge | Stripe, HubSpot, Shopify, Google Analytics, Google Search Console, iTick | DuckDB SQL (cached locally) |
More database integrations are coming soon. API Bridge connectors are actively expanding — each connector syncs data locally into DuckDB, so Nova queries them with DuckDB SQL syntax while your team sees the data alongside traditional database results in the same interface.
Security Architecture
Security is not an add-on feature — it is the foundation of the platform’s architecture. The Agent model was designed specifically for organizations that cannot (or should not) expose database ports to the internet.
How It Compares
Every analytics platform makes trade-offs. The table below compares Query Streams against common alternatives across the dimensions that matter most to teams evaluating options.
