What is a database reporting tool?

A database reporting tool is software that connects to a database, executes SQL queries, and presents the results in a structured, consumable format — whether that is a dashboard, a PDF, a spreadsheet, or an email. The term covers a broad spectrum from enterprise BI platforms like Tableau and Power BI to lightweight tools like Metabase and spreadsheet-native solutions like Query Streams. The core function is the same: get data out of a database and into the hands of the people who need it for decision-making.

How is Query Streams different from Tableau or Power BI?

Tableau and Power BI are full business intelligence platforms designed for interactive dashboards, data modeling, and enterprise-wide analytics. Query Streams is a spreadsheet-native database reporting tool — it delivers live SQL results directly into Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets. The key differences: no per-viewer BI license is needed (reports live in spreadsheets), there is zero learning curve for report consumers, and setup takes minutes instead of weeks. If your team needs data in a spreadsheet rather than a dashboard, Query Streams eliminates the overhead of a full BI deployment.

Which databases does Query Streams support?

Query Streams supports 10+ database engines from a single Agent installation: Microsoft SQL Server (including Azure SQL Database), PostgreSQL (including AWS RDS, Google Cloud SQL), MySQL, MariaDB, SQLite, Microsoft Access, Oracle, Snowflake, Google BigQuery, and DuckDB. More connectors are being added regularly. The Agent can connect to multiple different database types simultaneously, and all data sources appear in a unified dropdown for users.

Do report consumers need to know SQL?

No. Report consumers never see any SQL. They open the Excel add-in or Google Sheets add-on, see a list of reports they have been given access to, adjust any interactive filters (date ranges, regions, categories), and click to run. The SQL is authored once by a DBA, analyst, or developer and hidden from consumers entirely. For ad-hoc questions, Nova AI lets users ask in plain English — Nova generates the SQL behind the scenes so even the query author does not need to write SQL from scratch.

How do interactive filters work for parameterized reports?

There are two ways to create interactive filters. First, you can use explicit SQL variables like @start_date , @region , or @department in your query. Second, Query Streams can auto-detect static values in your WHERE clauses — for example, if your query contains WHERE brand = 'Acme' , it can create a filter for the brand column automatically. You configure filters in the query's Properties tab, where you set display labels, data types, and default values. End users see clean dropdowns, date pickers, or text inputs — they never interact with the raw SQL.

Is Query Streams secure enough for production databases?

Yes. The security model was designed for production environments. The Agent makes outbound-only connections on standard HTTPS/WSS ports — no inbound firewall rules, no port forwarding, no VPN tunnels. All queries are read-only; no INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, or DDL operations can reach your database. Database credentials stay on your server and are never transmitted to the cloud. Per-user access controls ensure each person only sees their authorized queries, and every execution is logged with timestamps and filter parameters for full audit compliance.

Can I schedule reports to run automatically?

Yes. Query Streams supports scheduled automation for recurring reports. You can configure queries to execute on a schedule — daily, hourly, or at custom intervals — and deliver updated data automatically to connected platforms including Airtable, Smartsheet, Baserow, and SeaTable. For Excel and Sheets, users can also set up their own refresh schedules or pull data on demand whenever they need the latest numbers.

What is Nova AI and how does it help with reporting?

Nova AI is a natural-language-to-SQL engine built into Query Streams. It reads your actual database schema — tables, columns, relationships, and data types — and generates dialect-correct SQL from plain English questions. Ask "Show me revenue by product category for Q1" and Nova writes the SQL for your specific database (PostgreSQL syntax for Postgres, T-SQL for SQL Server, etc.), runs it, and produces auto-generated charts alongside the results. It operates within the same read-only access controls as saved queries.

Can multiple users run reports at the same time?

Absolutely. The Query Streams Agent supports parallel query execution natively. Multiple users can run different reports simultaneously, and a single user can launch multiple queries at once — for example, five reports into five different worksheet tabs. The Agent streams each result concurrently, regardless of result size, so nobody waits in a queue for their data.

How do I share reports with external users or clients?

Query Streams makes external sharing straightforward and secure. Create an account for the external user, share specific queries with them, and they can access reports from the Excel add-in, Google Sheets add-on, or the web portal — from any location, without a VPN. They only see the queries you have shared, never the SQL code or database schema. This is particularly powerful for sharing live, filterable data with partners, contractors, or clients without emailing stale CSV files or granting database access.
