Database Dashboard - Build Live SQL Dashboards in Spreadsheets

Question 1

What is a database dashboard?

Accepted Answer

A database dashboard is a visual display of key metrics and data pulled directly from one or more databases using SQL queries. Instead of running raw queries and reading result tables, a dashboard presents the information as charts, graphs, KPI indicators, and summary tables that update on demand or on a schedule. Database dashboards are used by sales, finance, operations, and IT teams to monitor performance without needing direct database access.

Question 2

Can I build a database dashboard without writing code?

Accepted Answer

Yes. With Query Streams, the query author writes the SQL once and shares it with end users. The end users themselves never see or write SQL. They open the Microsoft Excel add-in or Google Sheets add-on, select a query from their list, adjust any interactive filters, and click run. Results flow into the spreadsheet where they can use native charts, pivot tables, and conditional formatting to build their dashboard views. If users need ad-hoc queries, Nova AI lets them ask questions in plain English instead of writing SQL.

Question 3

Which databases does Query Streams support for dashboards?

Accepted Answer

Query Streams supports 10+ databases from a single Agent installation: Microsoft SQL Server (including Azure SQL Database), PostgreSQL (including AWS RDS and Google Cloud SQL), MySQL, MariaDB, SQLite, Microsoft Access, Oracle, Snowflake, Google BigQuery, and DuckDB. A single agent can connect to multiple database engines simultaneously, and all data sources appear as a unified dropdown in the query builder. More database integrations are coming soon.

Question 4

How is a spreadsheet dashboard different from Grafana or Metabase?

Accepted Answer

Grafana and Metabase are self-hosted BI platforms that require you to deploy and maintain a dedicated server. They have their own dashboard interfaces that users must learn. Query Streams takes a different approach: it delivers live SQL query results directly into Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets, where your team already works. There is no BI server to host, no new interface to learn, and no per-seat licensing. Spreadsheet dashboards are ideal when the goal is getting live data into tools people already know, without the infrastructure overhead of a traditional BI platform.

Question 5

Can multiple team members share the same dashboard queries?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Query Streams uses a per-user access model . When you create a saved query, you explicitly share it with individual users or teams. Each shared user can independently open the Excel add-in or Google Sheets add-on, select the query, adjust any available filters, and run it to get live data on demand -- without any action from the query creator. Multiple users can run the same query simultaneously, each receiving their own results with their own filter selections.

Question 6

Does Query Streams support scheduled dashboard refreshes?

Accepted Answer

Query Streams supports scheduled data sync to platforms like Airtable, Smartsheet, Baserow, and SeaTable. You configure a sync schedule that automatically pushes fresh query results at intervals you define (hourly, daily, weekly). For Excel and Google Sheets dashboards, users refresh on demand by clicking run in the add-in/add-on. The combination of on-demand spreadsheet refresh and automated platform sync gives you flexible options for keeping dashboard data current.

Question 7

What chart types does Nova AI generate?

Accepted Answer

Nova AI generates six chart types: line charts, bar charts, pie charts, scatter plots, area charts, and horizontal bar charts . Nova automatically selects the most appropriate chart type based on the structure of the data returned by the query. For example, time-series data will default to a line chart, while categorical comparisons will default to a bar chart. These charts appear alongside the query results in the Query Streams web portal.

Question 8

Is my data secure when building dashboards with Query Streams?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The Query Streams Agent runs on your server and makes outbound-only connections on standard HTTPS/WSS ports. No inbound firewall rules are needed, and your database never accepts connections from the internet. Database credentials stay on your server and are never shared with users or transmitted to the cloud. All query execution is read-only, every run is logged with user identity and timestamps, and end users never see the underlying SQL, table names, or schema structure.

Question 9

Can I build dashboards from cloud databases like AWS RDS or Azure SQL?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. Deploy the Query Streams Agent on any machine with network access to your cloud database -- an EC2 instance in the same VPC as your AWS RDS database, an Azure VM alongside your Azure SQL Database, or a Google Cloud Compute Engine instance near your Cloud SQL instance. The Agent connects to the database locally and relays results securely. For optimal performance, deploy agents in the same region and network as the databases they serve.

Question 10

How do I get started building my first database dashboard?

Accepted Answer

Start by signing up for a free Query Streams account . Then download and install the Agent on any Windows, Linux, or macOS machine that can reach your database. The Agent registers automatically with your account. From the web portal, add your database as a data source, write your first saved query, and share it. Open the Excel add-in or Google Sheets add-on, select the query, and run it. Your first dashboard tab is live in under 10 minutes.

Question 11

How do I build dynamic dashboards from SQL without a BI tool?

Accepted Answer

Write your SQL queries in the Query Streams portal, add interactive filters for date ranges or categories, and share them with your team. Users open the Excel add-in or Google Sheets add-on, select a query, adjust filters, and click run. Results stream into the spreadsheet where they build charts and pivot tables using native tools. For ad-hoc questions, Nova AI generates SQL and charts from plain English -- no BI server like Grafana or Metabase needed.

Question 12

What is the best SQL dashboard software for small teams?

Accepted Answer

For small teams that already use Excel or Google Sheets, Query Streams is the fastest path to live SQL dashboards. There is no BI server to deploy, no per-seat licensing, and no new interface to learn. The free tier includes one Agent and core features. Larger teams can add multiple Agents, shared queries, and automation integrations. If your team needs self-service analytics beyond saved queries, Nova AI lets anyone ask questions in plain English and get instant SQL results with auto-generated charts.
