What is database automation and how does it differ from ETL?

Database automation refers broadly to using software to perform recurring database tasks without manual intervention — including scheduled query execution, data delivery, and report distribution. ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) is a specific type of data pipeline that extracts data from source systems, transforms it (cleaning, aggregating, restructuring), and loads it into a destination like a data warehouse. Query Streams focuses on the query-to-delivery pipeline: executing SQL and delivering raw or filtered results directly to spreadsheets and collaboration platforms. If you need heavy transformations between source and destination, a traditional ETL tool may be more appropriate, but for delivering query results on a schedule, Query Streams eliminates the need to build and maintain ETL infrastructure.

How do I schedule a SQL report to run automatically?

In the Query Streams web portal , create a saved query by writing your SQL and configuring any interactive filters. Then navigate to the Automation settings for that query, define a schedule (daily, weekly, monthly, or custom), and select one or more delivery destinations — such as an Airtable base, Smartsheet sheet, Baserow table, or SeaTable table. The Query Streams Agent executes the query on the defined schedule and pushes results to each configured destination automatically. Users can also pull data on demand from the Excel add-in or Google Sheets add-on at any time between scheduled runs.

Which databases does Query Streams support for scheduled automation?

Query Streams supports Microsoft SQL Server (including Azure SQL Database), PostgreSQL (including AWS RDS, Google Cloud SQL), MySQL , MariaDB , SQLite , Microsoft Access , Oracle , Snowflake , Google BigQuery , and DuckDB . A single Agent installation can connect to multiple database engines simultaneously, and all data sources appear as a unified dropdown in the query builder. More database integrations are coming soon.

Can I sync SQL results to Airtable and Smartsheet automatically?

Yes. Query Streams' Automation and Integration feature supports scheduled sync to Airtable, Smartsheet, Baserow, and SeaTable. You configure the destination in the web portal — specifying which Airtable base/table or Smartsheet sheet receives the data — and set a sync schedule. The Agent executes the query and pushes results directly into the destination platform without any intermediary scripts, Zapier automations, or custom API integrations.

Does Query Streams require inbound firewall rules or VPN access?

No. The Query Streams Agent makes outbound-only connections on standard HTTPS/WSS ports. No inbound firewall rules, no port forwarding, and no VPN tunnels are required. Your database never accepts connections from the internet. The Agent behaves like a web browser connecting to an external service — it works behind corporate firewalls, NATs, and proxy servers without any special network configuration. This makes it suitable for deployment in highly restricted enterprise environments.

Can I automate reports from SaaS platforms like Stripe and HubSpot?

Yes, through the API Bridge . Query Streams can connect to SaaS platforms including Stripe, HubSpot, Shopify, and Google Analytics 4 and expose their data as queryable SQL tables. You write SQL against your SaaS data the same way you query a traditional database, and the results flow through the same scheduling and delivery pipeline. You can even join SaaS data with your internal database tables in a single query.

How is Query Streams different from using cron jobs or SSIS?

Cron jobs and SSIS packages require scripting, server maintenance, and manual credential management for every automated report. Query Streams replaces the script-per-report pattern with a visual, web-based configuration: write a query, set a schedule, pick destinations. There is no crontab syntax, no Python scripts, no deployment pipelines, and no credentials stored in config files. Database passwords stay on the Agent and are never shared. Query Streams also adds built-in execution logging, multi-destination delivery from a single query, and end-user self-service from spreadsheets — capabilities that cron and SSIS do not provide out of the box.

Can multiple users refresh data at the same time?

Yes. Query Streams supports parallel query execution . Individual users can launch multiple saved queries simultaneously into different worksheet tabs in Excel or Google Sheets, and the Agent streams each result concurrently regardless of data volume. Multiple users can also pull data from the same or different queries at the same time without queuing or blocking each other. This makes batch refresh operations fast even for large teams with many reports.

What operating systems does the Query Streams Agent support?

The Agent is available for Windows (exe installer), Ubuntu/Debian Linux (deb package), any Linux distribution (tar.gz archive), and macOS for both Intel and Apple Silicon. You can deploy agents on-premises, in AWS EC2, Azure VMs, Google Cloud, or any other environment. Multiple agents per account are supported based on your subscription tier, and all agents self-maintain with automatic updates. Download the Agent to get started.

Is database automation with Query Streams free to try?

Yes. Query Streams offers a free tier that lets you deploy an Agent, connect data sources, build saved queries, and use the Excel and Google Sheets integrations. You can sign up for free and start automating data delivery without entering a credit card. Paid plans unlock additional features including more agents, more users, advanced scheduling, and expanded sync destinations.
